PERMIES: Who Will Work if You Fire All the Loafers?

Permanently employed personnel. Often, permies are blamed for being lazy and ineffective. The general causes of unwillingness to work might have a twist in their case.

First, if their salary is not aligned with their output, which is the case at universities, then exerting extra effort will not earn them any extra coin. So, why bother?

Second, there is a possibility that they understand how the system works better than you, and they know from experience that spending extra effort does not make sense: extra effort has never brought any worthy changes. They have the system’s expertise: they have witnessed it in action for many years. And although they might not share the experience with you, they will certainly avoid any effort above the minimum necessary.

Observe them and ask questions.
