SIGNAL/NOISE: The Ratio to Increase
The signal-to-noise ratio is the ratio of meaningful input to meaningless or unwanted input (background noise).
This engineering concept fits well in many situations.
One is the amount of overhead you have when working on a project. Your aim is minimum overhead (i.e., noise) and maximum result-generating work (i.e., signal). Another is limiting non-work-related issues (noise) and increasing the fraction of work-related problems (signal) that will benefit any work communication.
